# Poor AI design is draining your token budget

On real tasks, Acme spent 78% less on tokens than a generic agent.

## The token savings story

AI token economics is the study of what each AI task truly costs once every model call is counted. Teams keep adding assistants and agents, and the volume of tokens companies burn has multiplied many times over since 2023.

Bills rise every quarter. Money set aside for a full year of AI is gone by spring, and each extra request pushes the total higher still.

Design is what decides the bill: precise context so models read less, routing that matches each job to a suitable model, and a harness that manages context across thousands of requests. Identical work can cost a multiple more on a poorly built system.

## Four design choices that bring token costs down

- **Context layer**: Better inputs mean fewer tokens. Indexes built ahead of time return exactly the right passages, so the model isn't paying to merge, dedupe and clean raw data on every call.
- **Model routing**: Each job goes to the model that suits it best. A vendor tied to one model has no way to send work elsewhere; Acme works with many providers, so it can.
- **Ongoing learning**: The more it's used, the more it recognizes recurring patterns, and the less compute each correct answer requires.
- **Harness**: The harness assembles context for each request, so its design sets both token use and answer quality.
