What zero-access encryption means for your business

5 minutes read

Key takeaways

  • With zero-access encryption, your provider stores only data it cannot decrypt.
  • Morinel uses it for Mail, Drive, Notes and Vault; Docs, Chat and Meet are end-to-end encrypted.
  • Apps that must process data on the server use encryption keys unique to your company.

When you send an email or upload a file to a typical cloud service, the provider holds the keys to read it. That's how they can scan it, index it, and, for some, use it to target ads. Zero-access encryption changes that arrangement: the provider stores your data, but cannot read it.

How it works

Your content is encrypted on your own device, with keys derived from your credentials, before it reaches our servers. What we store is ciphertext. Without your keys, which never leave your control, nobody at Morinel can open it, and neither can anyone who asks us to.

  • Encryption happens in your browser or app, not on our servers
  • Keys are protected by your password and, for companies, by your admins' recovery setup
  • A stolen backup or a compromised server reveals nothing readable

Where Morinel uses it

We apply zero-access encryption to Mail, Drive, Notes and Vault. Docs, Sheets, Slides, Chat and Meet are end-to-end encrypted between the people taking part. Some apps have to work with data on the server, like adding up working hours in People or timing an SLA in Desk; that data is encrypted with keys unique to your company and kept apart from every other customer. See the full breakdown on our security page.

What changes for your team

Very little in daily use: search, sharing and mobile apps work as you'd expect. The main difference is that account recovery depends on your admins' setup, because we can't simply reset access to data we can't read.

Frequently asked questions

Can Morinel read my email?

No. Mail is stored with zero-access encryption, so we only hold data we cannot decrypt.

What happens if I forget my password?

Your company's admins can restore access through the recovery method set up for your organisation.
